The neurosurgeon, Kayn, figures out the deceit and since his sympathies are toward law and order, he alerts the Federation to Blakes presence and pursuits ships are sent. With only 30 mins until contact, Kayn begins the surgery, warning that Gan will die if they attempt to move out of range. The surgery is a sucess and with minutes to spare, Kayn is teleported back to XK72 and the Liberator turns to run.   An argument takes place on XK72 concerning the Kayn's notification of the Federation, the neutrality of the station has been compromised. During the dispute, Kayn strangles the station administrator. He then becomes so distraught by the act that he sits helplessly by as a bolt deflected off the Liberator destroys XK72.
